The stone engraving before you reconstructs scenes from an engraving in an Egyptian temple. The engraving depicts a sea and land battle between Pharaoh Ramses III and tribes which invaded Egypt. Pharaoh describes the invaders as "sea peoples" and includes the Philistines among them. The Philistines, wearing a feather head-dress, arrived by sea in ships and by land in war chariots and wagons with their wives and children. According to Pharaoh’s description, the sea peoples left their countries, across the sea, because of the troubles that befell them and, on the way, conquered various countries until they reached Egypt. In the battle against Pharaoh, the invaders were defeated and were sent by Pharaoh to serve as mercenaries in fortresses along the Egyptian border. When Egypt declined, the Philistine immigrants became a major force in southern Canaan and took control of its cities. Additional information about the migration of the Philistines can be found at the computer station behind you.
