At a time when the Philistine kingdom was becoming stronger on the coastal plain, the tribes of Israel were settling in the hills. Henceforth, these two peoples would be neighbors. The Bible cites confrontations between the Israelites and the Philistines, the most famous of which was the tragic encounter between Samson and Delilah, which is described in the pictures in front of you. This was preceded by a mixed-race wedding as described in Judges XIV: "And Samson went down to Timna and saw a woman in Timna of the daughters of the Philistines. And he came up and told his father and mother and said, I have seen a woman in Timna of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore get her for me to wife." Samson's parents were not pleased with this match. The Philistines subjugated the Israelites due to their organizational and material superiority, but in spite of this, the two peoples maintained personal and commercial relations. This state of affairs changed with the establishment of the Jewish kingdom.
