As in every aspect of their culture, the gods of the Philistines and their rituals were also a mixture of Aegean and local traditions. The Bible mentions Dagon and Beelzebub as the gods of the Philistines, but these were in fact local gods whom the Philistines adopted. The Philistines brought, from their homeland, the goddess Pitogaya, mother of the gods, of man, of animals and of the earth. The many icons of Pitogaya in their settlements testify to the Philistines’ love for their goddess.
